The Northeast Iowa Choral Directors Association Fifth and Sixth Grade Honor Choir was held Tuesday, April 25 at the Williams Performing Arts Center in Oelwein. The concert took place at 7 p.m. and was open to the public. Mr. Aaron Hansen and Mrs. Luanne Rogers were the guest directors for the two choirs. Thirty-six area schools and churches participated, involving a total of 251 students. Community came together once again at East Elementary Kids Club in Waukon, this time to put on a Bike Rodeo for students. Ashley Christensen of Upper Explorerland Regional Planning Commission, Andrew Blair of Northeast Iowa Food & Fitness Initiative, Karen Cooper, Traci Byrnes and Barb Shull from the local RAGBRAI® Ride Right Committee, and Tami Gebel, Stef Perkins and Nicki Smedsrud from the Parent Group PSST (Parents Supporting Students and Teachers) all participated in making it an enjoyable and educational event. Hardees in Waukon donated cookie coupons to participants, and students from Waukon Middle School also joined the Kids Club group for the day. Students learned the proper way to approach another bicyclist, pass and ride an obstacle course. They were also able to make smoothies with the Bicycle Blender.
Waukon High School Prom and Post Prom were held Saturday, April 29. This year's theme for the Prom dance held in the Waukon Middle School gym was "A Night Under the Stars" with Parker Lane providing the music. The Post Prom committee provided a photo booth and prizes every 15 minutes during the dance, with prizes including gift certificates to local restaurants, theaters and baseball organizations and a $100 cash drawing at 11 p.m. for students that were present through the entire dance, won by Waukon High School junior Landon Berns (pictured at right). Students also enjoyed an ice cream bar, a dance cam and board games in the cafeteria.

The Waukon boys golf team ended up with just one date of competition this past week, hosting Postville Tuesday, May 2. The Indians had a Monday, May 1 home date with Oelwein in Northeast Iowa Conference play postponed by cold, rainy weather to Tuesday, May 9.
The Indians posted a victory in last week’s lone competition, bettering the visiting Postville Pirates’ effort by a 185-224 final result. Freshman Logan Houg led the Indian effort with his medalist round of 43, with senior Logan Sullivan claiming runner-up medalist honors with his score of 45 strokes. Sophomore Michael Headington also ended up with a round under 50 with his 47, while junior Jess Kloke finished right at 50 strokes to complete the varsity team scoring for the golf Tribe in the victory.
Mitchell Snitker hurdles his way to NEIC championship in 400 meter lows
The Waukon boys track team brought its regular season schedule to a close this past week, having its final invitational meet of the season, Tuesday, May 2 at New Hampton, canceled due to cool, rainy weather before competing in the annual Northeast Iowa Conference (NEIC) Meet Thursday, May 4 at Waverly-Shell Rock. The Indians benefited from a lone NEIC championship won by junior Mitchell Snitker, along with four other runner-up event finishes at the meet, in racking up 81 team points to finish in the middle of the NEIC Meet’s seven-team final standings with a fourth-place team placing.

Freshman Ellec Armstead soars to NEIC championship in the high jump
For the second consecutive week, the Waukon girls track team was limited to just a single meet and that lone competition marked an end to the Indians’ regular season. The track Tribe took part in the annual Northeast Iowa Conference (NEIC) Meet Thursday, May 4 at Waverly-Shell Rock High School, finishing sixth in the final team standings with a total of 58 team points.

On what may have been the most ideal day to compete, weather-wise, for the entire season so far, the Kee girls track team turned in some performances that shined brighter than that Thursday, May 4 sun at the annual Upper Iowa Conference (UIC) Meet hosted by Edgewood-Colesburg High School. Crowning three UIC champions and breaking three school records in the process, the Lady Hawks racked up 99 points to finish third in the final 11-team standings at the meet.

The Waukon girls golf team had just one date of competition last week, but opened this week with a third-place finish at the Northeast Iowa Conference Tournament hosted by Charles City Monday, May 8. The Indians were finally able to make up a postponed April 4 date at Charles City, but ended up competing against more than just the host Comets in what turned out to be a Tuesday, May 2 quadrangular event. The Indian lady linksters also had a Monday, May 1 road dual at Oelwein postponed to a make-up date of Thursday, May 11 to be played, instead, at Waverly-Shell Rock.
Idella J. Bresnahan, 87, of Waukon died Wednesday, May 3, 2017 at Good Samaritan Center in Waukon. Funeral services were held Monday, May 8 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Waukon with Fr. Mark Osterhaus officiating. Burial was at St. Mary's Hanover Cemetery, rural Waukon.
Idella Julia Bresnahan was born October 12, 1929 in Hanover Township, the daughter of Maurice Francis and Estella (Dahlen) Gallagher. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary's Hanover Catholic Church, attended rural country schools, and graduated from St. Patrick High School in 1948. Idella also attended Luther College in Decorah, where she received her Teaching Certificate and began teaching in rural country schools in the Waukon area.
