Ag Olympics Thursday at the Allamakee County Fair

The Allamakee County 4-H County Council is sponsoring the annual Ag Olympics during the Allamakee County Fair, Thursday, July 18, at the Allamakee County Fairgrounds Show Barn at 5 p.m. The Ag Olympics is a timed obstacle relay race. These obstacles are things one would see at the fair, such as the round bale climb and wheelbarrow race.

Farm accident claims McGregor man near Volney

At approximately 6:40 a.m. Friday, July 12, the Allamakee County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a fatal farm accident at 206 Country Road in southern Allamakee County, between Monona and the community of Volney.
A report from the Sheriff's Office indicates that 63-year-old Daniel Specht of McGregor was moving round hay bales in the 200 block of Country Road when a bale on the front loader of the tractor Specht was operating rolled back onto him, causing fatal injuries.

Join the fun at the Allamakee County Fair this week

This week, July 17-21, the 160th Allamakee County Fair will be held for all to enjoy at the Allamakee County Fairgrounds in Waukon. A wide variety of entertainment  - including some locally familiar and nationally recognized talent - is in place to headline this year’s fair at the grandstand, along with a great deal of other activities for everyone to enjoy each and every day throughout the five-day event.

Standard Newspaper among many downtown businesses forced to close due to flash flooding

The office of The Standard Newspaper, located on First Street Northwest in Waukon, was just one of many downtown business forced to temporarily close as a result of flash flooding that occured in the early morning hours of Sunday, June 23. As a result, The Standard was not published this week, but is expected to be delivered as usual next week, Wednesday, July 3.

Registration deadline June 30 for 2013 Allamakee County Fair Queen competition

The Allamakee County Fair Board is seeking applicants for the 2013 Allamakee County Fair Queen contest, with this year’s fair running July 17-21.
The contest will run similarly to that of the Iowa State Fair Queen Contest. There will be one formal interview conducted by judges. This is where the majority of the judging will take place.
Coronation of the 2013 Allamakee County Fair Queen will take place following the “Allamakee County Youth Showcase” Tuesday evening, July 16 at the Pavilion building on the Allamakee County Fairgrounds. This event will begin at 7 p.m.

Lechtenberg joins ISU Extension as Youth Co-Coordinator

Leah Lechtenberg has joined ISU Extension and Outreach as a County Youth Co-Coordinator for Allamakee County Extension. She is responsible for the management and coordination of the traditional 4-H community club program in Allamakee County.
Lechtenberg joins Sue Pederson in fulfilling outreach to Allamakee youth. Pederson supports K-12 Outreach through alternative, school-based and summer youth development programming.

Hay Expo set to take place Wednesday and Thursday at Regancrest

The 2013 Farm Progress Hay Expo, the nation’s largest two-day hay event, will showcase the latest technology for hay and forage producers Wednesday and Thursday, June 19 and 20 at the Regancrest Holsteins farm located north of Waukon on State Highway 9. The event will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days, and the public is welcome. Admission is free, but there is a per vehicle parking fee.
