During the Allamakee County Board of Supervisors' final meeting of 2013, held Monday, December 30, The Board appointed Mary Koopman of Postville to serve on the Upper Explorerland Regional Planning Commission. The Board also appointed Case Management Director Kim Waters to serve as the interim CPC while the Board searches for a suitable replacement for Jan Heikes, who resigned from the position recently.

Inspiration can come in the unlikeliest of forms.
But for a group of northeast Iowans, that inspiration has come from a good-natured black Labrador named Jake.
Those who know Jake and what he’s been through know he has every reason to mistrust people.
But he doesn’t.
In fact, the intrepid pooch with the affable nature melts the hearts of all he meets, according to owner Dan McGovern of Harper’s Ferry and Brenda Flatjord of Waukon, who fostered Jake through his ordeal.

Deadline is Monday for "Person of the Year" and other Chamber of Commerce award nominations

The Waukon Chamber of Commerce is seeking nominations from community residents for awards to be presented at its annual banquet in February. Nominations are being accepted for awards including Years of Service, New Business of the Year, Business of the Year, Volunteer of the Year and Person of the Year honors.

Veterans Memorial Hospital physicians and staff announced that Landon Steven David Wilkes, son of Steven and Natasha Wilkes of Waukon, was the winner of the First Baby of the Year Contest at Veterans Memorial Hospital.
Landon was born January 2, 2013 at 6:52 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Hospital. Dr. David Schwartz was his physician. Landon weighed 8 pounds, 11 ounces and measured 21 1/2 inches in length when he arrived.

Town hall meetings with area legislators scheduled

Allamakee and Winneshiek County Farm Bureaus will be hosting a series of town hall meetings with area legislators and supervisors for the public to attend. The first of those meetings is scheduled for this Saturday, December 21 at 11:15 a.m. at the Decorah City Hall. A second meeting in the Decorah area is scheduled for February 15, with two meetings also scheduled at the Allamakee County Farm Bureau office in Waukon for January 18 and March 15.

Allamakee County Community Foundation now accepting 2014 applications for grants

Non-profit organizations can apply for grants from the Allamakee Community Foundation (ACCF) for projects or programs that address significant community issues and benefit a broad spectrum of the community. Projects must be in Allamakee County and the maximum grant awarded will be $20,000.

Sheriff's Office investigating pair of recent vehicle thefts

The Allamakee County Sheriff's Office received a report that a 2014 Polaris UTV was stolen from Waukon Power Sports on Highway 9 during the early morning hours of Wednesday, December 11. The suspects reportedly entered the business lot and cut a padlock that locked three machines together for security. The stolen vehicle is described as a 2014 Polaris RZR 1000XP, PS, titanium metal in color, VIN 4XAST1EA6EB187531. A cash reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the theft.
