Candidates in Waukon City Council At-Large run-off election share views

Polling site at NICC opens at 7 a.m. for December 3 race

A run-off election to determine the winner of the At-Large Waukon City Council seat is scheduled for Tuesday, December 3. The run-off election is the result of neither At-Large incumbent candidate Joe Cunningham nor write-in challenger Darrold Brink receiving at least the simple majority (50% plus one) of the votes cast in the Tuesday, November 5 City Election, a requirement mandated by the Waukon City Code.

Canoe trail from Lansing to Harpers Ferry becoming reality thanks to collaboration of USFWS and Allamakee Economic Development

There are many canoe trails in the 261 miles of the Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge, but local folks are excited about a new trail that will be available starting next spring from Lansing to Harpers Ferry.

Michelle Winkie crowned as Allamakee County Beef Queen

The Allamakee County Cattlemen's Association crowned the 2013-2014 Allamakee County Beef Queen and Princesses Saturday, November 2 at its annual Purple Ribbon Prospect Sale held at Northeast Iowa Sales Commission north of Waukon. Being crowned as the 2013-2014 Allamakee County Beef Queen was Michelle Winkie of Waukon, with Lexie Bieber and Shelby Troendle being named Allamakee County Beef Princesses. Biographies of all three young ladies appear below:

City election recounts confirm Steffens as Ward 3 winner and need for run-off election for Waukon Council At-Large

While most of the results from the Tuesday, November 5 city elections made for clear-cut winners of available city government and administration seats, a pair of races in the Waukon City Council election lingered on for an extra week, with one of those races still being unsettled and requiring a run-off election to determine a winner.

Public urged to attend, provide input at C2C meeting November 13

Members of the general public are strongly encouraged to provide their input at the public meeting being hosted Wednesday, November 13 by the Waukon Works Committee for the next phase of the Iowa State University Communities to Community (C2C) project. Results of the recent community survey will be shared, and further public input will be needed. All interested community members are encouraged to attend, and they are welcome to come and go as they please during the meeting timeframe, which will be from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Waukon NICC Center Wednesday, November 13.

Veterans Memorial Health Care Foundation Christmas Fantasy is set for this weekend

The Veterans Memorial Health Care Foundation’s Christmas Fantasy 2013 will be held Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday, November 15, 16, 17 and 18 at the Allamakee County Fairgrounds Pavilion in Waukon. This year's theme of “Walking In a Winter Wonderland”  will be portrayed in the nearly 70 decorated Christmas trees on display.

City elections eventful in Waukon; Voters mainly stay the course in most other area communities

Area voters in the Tuesday, November 5 city elections chose to avoid much change for a majority of the elected positions on this year's ballots. A couple incumbent candidates did see their tenures voted to an end, with a late write-in challenge and some equipment difficulties in the City of Waukon election still leaving some races unsettled.
