NEICAC-Transit to offer free rides for veterans Nov. 11

All over the nation, veterans will be honored November 11 for their service to this country. In Iowa, many of the state’s public transit agencies will be offering free rides to veterans and their families to thank them for their sacrifice.
NEICAC-Transit, the public transit provider for Allamakee, Clayton, Fayette, Howard and Winneshiek counties, supports military families. To show support, NEICAC-Transit will be offering free rides to veterans Veterans Day, Monday, November 11 on all scheduled in-town services.

Vietnam veteran Jim Fossum hosts reunion with pair of fellow U.S. Air Force veterans

Jim Fossum of Waukon recently played host to a reunion with a pair of fellow U.S. Air Force veterans, sharing the sites and other amenities of his native northeast Iowa and reminiscing about their days together spent serving their country during the Vietnam War era.
"I know that the Vietnam War wasn't very popular," Fossum said. "But I'm still very proud of my service and of all those guys who served with me."

Update: Write-in candidate Darrold Brink request recount in Waukon election

Thursday afternoon, November 7 the Allamakee County Board of Supervisors canvassed the results of the city elections held in Waukon Tuesday, November 5. The results of other City elections held last Tuesday will be canvassed by the Board Tuesday, November 12. County Auditor Denise Beyer explained that because the City of Waukon has runoff provisions in its code, its election results needed to be canvassed earlier than the other elections.

City Meat Market named Cloy Kuhse Positive Impact Award winner

The Allamakee County Economic Development (ACED) Board and membership held the organization's annual banquet and meeting Thursday, October 10. The event was held at the historic Stone Quarry Building in New Albin. Following the dinner, the annual meeting was conducted by Laura Olson, Executive Director of ACED and Mike Kruckenberg, ACED Board President.
During the meeting, the annual Cloy Kuhse Positive Impact Award winner was announced. This award is chosen by the ACED Board of Directors and the 2013 recipient was Wuennecke’s City Meat Market of New Albin, located along Hwy. 26.

City elections slated for November 5 feature wide variety of races for mayor, city council

Elections for city officials will take place throughout Allamakee County Tuesday, November 5. Polls will be open from 12 noon to 8 p.m. that day for community residents to vote at their respective polling sites. Those sites, along with sample ballots and other election information, can be found on Page 5B of last week's (October 23) issue of The Standard.

Waukon, Kee football teams to host first-round State Play-Offs Wednesday

The Waukon and Kee football teams will each open State Football Play-Off action at home this Wednesday, October 30, both games beginning at 7 p.m. Look for Spirit Banners in this week's Standard newspaper or at each high school or sponsoring businesses early this week to proudly display your support for the Indians and Hawks during their play-off journeys.
