Allamakee County Protectors awarded Neal Smith Grass Roots Award by Sierra Club

The Sierra Club of Iowa presented the Allamakee County Protectors (ACP) with its Neal Smith Grass Roots Award at a ceremony at the Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge in Prairie City October 5. The award is presented “to the people who have done outstanding work in protection of the environment,” said Pamela Mackey Taylor, chair of the awards committee, who is pictured at left above with ACP Vice President Robert Nehman after presenting him with the Neal Smith Grass Roots Award.

October is Pork Month: Waukon Feed Ranch manages enough pork to feed 1.3 million people

With the statistic in mind that the average person eats almost 64 pounds of pork a year, Waukon Feed Ranch (WFR) helps feed around 1.3 million people per year.
“The farms Waukon Feed Ranch manages produce 81 million pounds of pork a year,” said Jeff Monk, WFR swine division manager.
“WFR is proud to be a contributor to the hog industry, economic development and one of the largest employers in Allamakee County,” said Nancy Everman, human relations manager at WFR.

Area phone, internet services interrupted by cut fiber optics line

Sunday afternoon and evening, October 20, CenturyLink customers in the Waukon, Lansing and surrounding areas experienced interruption of their telephone and internet services after a third-party construction crew reportedly cut through a fiber optic cable located near Frankville. According to a report, telephone and internet services were interrupted late Sunday afternoon and finally restored at approximately 1:30 a.m. Monday, October 21. CenturyLink officials say 9-1-1 services were rerouted, per system design in such incidences, during the outage.

Cause of vacant trailer fire still under investigation

The Waukon Fire Department and Waukon Police Department responded to a report of a fire at an unoccupied trailer home at Northview Trailer Court in northwest Waukon Thursday evening, October 10. Waukon Police Chief Phil Young reported that the trailer was fully engulfed in flames when the fire and police departments arrived at the scene. Young said that police officers evacuated the residents of nearby trailers while the fire department concentrated on preventing the fire from spreading to adjacent trailers.

Presentation on the Orphan Train set for October 24

In observance of the 100th anniversary of its arrival in Waukon, Elaine Eadie of Waukon will host a presentation on the Orphan Train Thursday, October 24 at 7 p.m. in the Farmers and Merchants Savings Bank Community Room in Waukon. Eadie's presentation is based on her research into the experiences of her father, Gilbert Eadie, and her uncle, Watler Eadie, who came to the Waukon area on the Orphan Train in 1914. The event is sponsored by the Allamakee County Historical Society and there will be a free-will donation to cover the cost of refreshments.
