Iowa DNR to host public meeting on deer depredation this Wednesday
The Iowa Department of Natural Resources will be holding a deer depredation public meeting Wednesday, March 9 at 1 p.m. in Waukon at the Allamakee County Farm Bureau Building meeting room.
Iowa DNR Biologists will conduct the informational meeting on deer management, population surveys, and the deer depredation program. The public is invited to attend to learn more about deer management. Time will be allowed for questions to be asked by attendees.

During the 2004-2005 campaign, Jeremy was one of several sophomore athletes to step into a starting role for the Indian basketball team. A forward for the Tribe, Jeremy ended the year with 110 rebounds, the second-best total for the squad. He also finished in the top five with 103 points, 36 assists, 16 steals, and five blocks.

The sophomore’s presence was felt all around northeast Iowa as he was named to the Northeast Iowa Conference’s Honorable Mention squad. During conference games, Jeremy averaged 5.33 rebounds per game, the seventh best output among all league players.

The Waukon Senior High competition cheer squad scored a first place finish Sunday, Feb. 27 at the Badger Cheerleading 2005 Competition at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison, Wis. The Indians were the top team in the Large Varsity division. The event was the final competition of the year for the squad, coached by Terri Kleinow.

The Board of Control of the Iowa High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) and the Board of Directors of the Iowa Girls’ High School Athletic Union (IGHSAU) have voted to adopt three-person officiating mechanics for their tournament series competitions effective with the 2006-2007 season.

The change means all sectional, district, regional, sub-state, and state tournament games beginning with the 2007 tournament series will be officiated by three-person crews. Schools will retain the current option of using two- or three-person crews during the regular season.

Main Feature Theater in Waukon will be showing the Class 3A girls basketball championship game this Saturday, March 12, should the Indians advance into the final round. Championship action begins at 6 p.m. and will be shown on the theater’s big screen. No admission will be charged as the game will be televised in eastern Iowa on KFXB Fox 28.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources has been conducting Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) sampling for three years. Although samples taken this winter have been submitted for testing, the results will probably not be completed until late spring. Up to now, all samples from Iowa have come back negative.

This past fall and winter, 500 samples were needed from most counties bordering the Mississippi River which, of course, includes Allamakee and Clayton counties. Ten to 15 samples are collected from all other counties in Iowa.

Waukon’s ninth grade boys basketball squad easily defeated New Hampton Tuesday, Feb. 15. The Tribe posted a 44-27 victory.

Marcus Tweedy paced the scoring with 14 points while Colin Egan added eight. Logan Anderson and Ryan Anderson each finished with six.

Tweedy led the battle on the boards, too, grabbing six. Logan Anderson snagged five while Egan had four rebounds.

Logan Anderson and Egan each registered three steals while Ryan Anderson and Ed Schoenthal grabbed two apiece.

Success came on both the team and individual level as the Tribe posted a 9-7 dual record overall and advanced a pair of grapplers to the state tournament.

Coach Greg Adams is glad to see his charges moving ahead. “I’m very proud of the guys and what they have accomplished. There’s a lot of excitement within our program right now. There’s a lot of anticipation for a great season next year,” he said.

A quick look back at the recent season shows why the Indians are confident in a good showing next winter.
