The tradition of weekly ecumenical Lenten Breakfasts will come to an end for another year next week at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Waukon. The breakfasts begin at 6:45 a.m., serving coffee, juice and rolls, with the program starting at 7 a.m. Everyone is welcome to attend each week.

The men gather each Monday during the Lenten season and the women meet each Thursday for the breakfast events. Locations are rotated between area churches each week.

Gerald Kurth (left), age 88, and Muriel Bakkum (right), age 86, were voted as this year’s Valentine’s King and Queen in honor of the annual celebration held at Makee Manor. Valentine’s Week at Makee Manor was celebrated with many activities, including a dance, Valentine bingo and trivia, and making Valentine cards. Residents also enjoyed special cookies made by Patsy Kerndt.

With prom, weddings, and swimsuit season right around the corner, many may find themselves wanting to get a jumpstart on their summer tan. For those who feel that sounds like something they could use, they need to look no further than downtown Waukon and Island Glow Tan tanning salon.

The 2005 Allamakee County Dairy Banquet is set for Saturday, March 19 at the Allamakee County Fairgrounds Pavilion. The annual celebration recognizes the importance of the dairy industry in Allamakee County and the contributions dairy families make to this important industry.
The meal to kick off the event will be served from 7 - 8:30 p.m. with the program starting at 8 p.m. and a dance following the awards distribution and coronation of this year’s Allamakee County Dairy Princess.

In honor of March being Chamber Membership Appreciation Month, the Waukon Chamber of Commerce recognizes and extends its sincere appreciation to the more than 160 businesses, industries, professionals and individuals dedicated to enhancing the business climate of the Waukon area and promoting the highest quality of life by becoming Waukon Chamber of Commerce members. The visions, insights, feedback, community involvement, enthusiasm and excitement shown by these Chamber members have been vital links in the chain of the Waukon Chamber and the success of the Waukon community.

The Waukon City Council met in regular session Monday, March 7. The meeting began with three public hearings, one concerning the proposed city budget for the next fiscal year beginning July 1, another concerning vacation of a portion of the Fifth Street SE cul-de-sac and storm sewer easement, and the third hearing concerning the proposed disposition in the portion of the Fifth Street SE cul-de-sac.

The annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Waukon will be held Sunday, March 13 at 1 p.m. All the usual activities involving food, music and fun are expected to again take place following the parade.

With no written or stated comments for or against the budget, the board ultimately stamped it with approval.

VMH Financial Director Scott Knode explained some of the key points used to help formulate the budget for the upcoming year, stating that anticipated patient volume for each year’s budget is based on an average of patient volume from the previous three years. This year’s patient volume consideration, however, allowed for a three percent increase on the assumption that the new Gundersen Clinic would have an impact on patient volumes at VMH.
