The eighth grade girls basketball team recently completed the 2004 season. Twenty-seven girls made up the squad this year and Dave Kruger and Pam Herman were coaches.

“These girls had desire to learn about the game and willingness to get better. As a result of these qualities, improvement was shown throughout the season,” said Kruger.

Several Allamakee County residents have been invited to receive the 2004 Trophy Fish or Buck Print Award at the 30th Annual Eastern Iowa Sportshow scheduled for March 11-13 at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls. The awards recognize trophy animals taken in Iowa and registered with the Department of Natural Resources in 2003-2004.

Waukon’s sophomore boys basketball squad wrapped up a fine 2004-2005 season late in February. The Indians were 16-5 overall, which included a third place, 9-3 record in the Northeast Iowa Conference.

Offensively, the Indians had five athletes finish the season with over 100 points. Vaughn Gesing led the Indians with 218 points while Will Kramer added 170. Derek Snitker sank 142 points while Russell ReVoir accounted for 134 tallies and Shawn Bjerke added 114.

Andrew Snitker paced the Tribe in the paint. His 133 rebounds and 42 blocks easily paced the Indians.

The 2004-2005 Waukon boys basketball season hinged on the development of a young squad. Only two letterwinners returned to lead a roster that included seven juniors and sophomores new to the varsity scene. Despite those obstacles, Waukon managed a 13-9 season record and finished in the middle of the Northeast Iowa Conference race with a 7-5 league standing.

“I think I’d call our season a success,” said head coach Don Kuennen. “As young a squad as we were, we still came out with 13 wins and a 7-5 record in conference play. I’m pleased with the way the year went.”

Gerald LaVelle “Jerry” Bulman, age 55, of Tuttle, Okla., passed away Friday, February 25, 2005, of cancer while awaiting a bone marrow transplant. Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 1, at Fort Sill National Cemetery, Elgin, Okla., with full military honors.

Gerald was born April 10, 1949, in Decorah, Iowa, to Donald Patrick and Loretta Margaret (McCormick) Bulman. Gerald married Evaun Ponder on February 20, 1971, in Denison, Texas.

He retired SMSGT E-8 US Air Force on February 28, 1989. He served his country proudly and was a veteran of Vietnam.

Jennie Marie Gaulthier, age 99, of Lansing, Iowa, died Sunday, March 6, 2005, at Thornton Manor in Lansing. Visitation is Tuesday, March 8 from 4 to 8 p.m. at Thornburg-Hanson Funeral Home, Lansing. A Parish Scripture Service will be held at 8 p.m. Funeral services will be Wednesday, March 9 at 11 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Lansing with Father Daniel Knipper officiating. Burial will be in Gethsemane Cemetery, Lansing. Thornburg-Hanson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Arden Anderson, age 69, of Decorah, Iowa, died Tuesday, March 1, 2005, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, Minn., following a short illness. Funeral services were held Friday, March 4, at Madison Lutheran Church, Decorah, with Pastors Philip Olson and Ginny Olson officiating. Interment was in Madison Lutheran Cemetery, Decorah, Iowa. Graveside military rites were given by Bernatz-Symonds American Legion Post #163, Helof-Holm VFW Post #1977, and Hamre-Giesen DAV Chapter #8. Arrangements were by Schluter-Balik Funeral Home of Decorah.

Ethel Wagner, 91, of Waukon, died Thursday, March 3, 2005, at Good Samaritan Center in Waukon. Funeral services were held Monday, March 7 at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon, with Rev. Lynn G. Groe officiating. Burial was in the Monona Cemetery, Monona. Martin Funeral Home in Waukon was in charge of arrangements.

Ethel Stone was born August 17, 1913, in Waukon, Iowa, the daughter of Delbert and Julia Etta (Graves) Stone. She attended Waukon Schools.

Burckart
Christopher A. Burckart, 41, was charged with fourth degree criminal mischief after Waukon police officers were called to 206 First Street NE around 10 p.m on July 28, 2004.
According to the report, officers were met by Lila Nobles, who explained that that she and Burckart had been involved in a verbal/physical disagreement. Burckart was escorted from the residence, however he returned about 50 minutes later. He kicked in the door to gain entrance. He was later arrested and booked.
