Sweeney collected his prize at a school assembly last week after winning St. Patrick School’s First Annual Kiss the Rat Contest, the fourth grade class project for St. Patrick’s annual Mardi Gras fundraising event. Sweeney was one of six contestants who had their names attached to donation jars at various locations around Waukon in a rather unique effort to raise funds for the Friends of St.

Grant Alexander Ware came into the world on March 8th at 2:49 pm. He was 8 lbs. 9 oz and 21.5 inches long.

The Waukon Fire Department would like to remind area residents to use extra caution when burning items during this time of year. The burning of yard waste, ditches and trash that becomes prominent during this time of year has made springtime an extremely busy period for the local fire volunteers in the past, and some extra caution and common sense can help alleviate that problem.

• $500 fine for illegal dumping.

• Authorized waste disposal includes yard clippings, leaves, garden and fruit tree waste, shrubs, tree limbs and trunks.

• No other waste is permitted at this site and violators will be prosecuted.

• Yard and garden waste must be emptied in designated areas and removed from containers.

• No plastic bags, buckets, or boxes should remain.

• No burning.

The Allamakee County Board of Supervisors met Monday, March 7 in a regular meeting. Among the items on the agenda which received the most discussion were a request by the E-911 board to have two new towers built, an update from Rick Zahasky on Union negotiations, and the public hearing for the FY06 Budget.

Wednesday, April 6 is the day designated as “Advocating Change Day” at the Iowa State capital. The day is designed specifically for individuals with disabilities and their families to become skilled at communicating with their state legislators and state elected officials and to attend a rally at the state capital advocating for services for Iowans with disabilities. The Governor’s Council on Developmental Disabilities is hosting the event.

Phi Theta Kappa (PTK), an organization devoted to student academic excellence in junior colleges, recently honored a Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC) administrator and human services instructor.

Kathy Howes of Dorchester, a human services instructor at the Calmar Campus, was named a 2005 Faculty Scholar and 2005 Parnell Scholar. Howes will serve as the organization’s 2005 Faculty Scholar. She will attend PTK’s Faculty Scholar Conference and the International Honors Institute.

Brittany Phipps, a 2004 graduate of Waukon Senior High School, has received her degree in the career of massage therapy at La’James College in Mason City. Phipps received extensive training in anatomy and physiology, massage theory and practice specialized techniques, personal wellness, business practices, management and marketing.

Amber Jackson, a 2004 graduate of Waukon Senior High School, will play trumpet in the Buena Vista University (BVU) Concert Band’s annual Winter Concert Sunday, March 13 at 3 p.m. in Schaller Memorial Chapel on the BVU campus in Storm Lake. Jackson is the daughter of Dean and Mary Jackson of Waukon and is a BVU freshman majoring in mathematics.
