It’s spring! The buds are on the trees. The flowers are beginning to bloom. It’s time to spruce things up around the house and yard, to put winter behind us and make everything look its best.

Ice also played a part in an accident involving Sara M. Goeke, 20, Harpers Ferry.
On Feb. 9, at approximately 5:20 p.m., Goeke was heading east on Sweet Ridge Road, about eight miles southeast of Lansing, when she attempted to slow for the road’s intersection with Iron Wood Road. Due to ice on the road, her vehicle slid across the road and entered the ditch.
Goeke was transported to Veterans Memorial Hospital by her mother. A passenger in the car was not reported injured.
The 1995 Pontiac Grand Am had damage estimated at $4,000.

Do you like clean roadways? That may sound like a meaningless question. I wish it was a meaningless question. Although Iowa enjoys clean roadways right now, that may be about to change.

Some top Iowa legislators are eager to increase the speed limit and fatality rate. Tell your lawmakers that Iowa doesn’t have to follow the herd instinct and run off the cliff with the heavy foot states.

I want to alert you to a terrific musical that, I predict, will travel all over Iowa in the coming months and years. It's “Six-on-Six,” the story of the end of six-player basketball in Iowa.

In the last few years, a lot of legislative activity has taken place regarding coverage for mental illness. This movement has generally been referred to as mental health parity. Proponents of mental health parity typically want mandated mental health and substance abuse insurance coverage and argue that to do otherwise would be discriminatory.

This week saw a flurry of committee and subcommittee meetings as we work to perfect bills for floor debate. Budget targets have been announced in the House and the Senate targets should be forthcoming.

Once the size of the pie is determined, targets can be identified. It is very important that we don’t grow state spending faster than our revenues increase. That would mean we were promising to spend more than we had coming in. If that occurs, tax increases would not be far behind.

... that come June, (if I make it to June; there are no guarantees, are there?) I will have lived in this same house for 60 years, minus four years in university and four years in the Navy. I know a lot of the furniture is stuff that my paternal grandmother once owned, and it came with her when she came to live with my parents in Waukon after the death of her husband in 1933, the year before I was born. I have no idea how many years before that the things were purchased, but it suffices to say the stuff is old.

But today, let’s consider the flying carp.

The flying carp, or more correctly the silver carp, can weigh up to 60 pounds, according to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, or DNR. The silver carp also has the ability to burst from the water and catapult itself several feet into the air.

Veterans Memorial Hospital will hold the next quarterly Prepared Childbirth Education class Saturday, April 9, beginning at 9 a.m. in the Large Conference Room. The class will end at 4:30 p.m. and lunch will be provided. This new one-day format replaces the hospital’s previous four-week evening program to better fit the expectant parent’s schedules.
