Jail Task Committee to meet this Thursday

The Allamakee County Public Safety Center/Jail Task Committee is scheduled to meet at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, April 10. The Committee will meet in the community room at Farmers & Merchants Savings Bank in Waukon.

Pair of East Elementary students named State Handwriting Champions

Zaner-Bloser, the Language Arts and Reading CompanySM, has announced that two students from East Elementary School in Waukon are State winners for their grade levels in the company's annual handwriting contest.  Kiara Ahlstrom, daughter of Brian and Vicki Ahlstrom of Waukon, has been named Iowa’s best fourth grade  handwriter, and Madalyn Palmer, daughter of Eric and Stephanie Palmer of Waukon, has been named Iowa’s best fifth grade handwriter.

Sheriff's Office seeking information on series of break-ins into seasonal cabins near Lansing

Since March 24, the Allamakee County Sheriff's Department has received reports that six cabins located north of Lansing had allegedly been broken into sometime during the winter. Allamakee County Sheriff Clark Mellick said that all of the cabins were unoccupied over the winter and were apparently entered by a person or persons who pried the doors open to gain entry. Mellick said that while nothing was taken from some of the cabins, several valuable items, including numerous guns, were taken from others.

Republican Candidate Forum set for this Sunday

The Republican Central Committees for Allamakee, Clayton and Winneshiek counties will be hosting a Republican Candidate Forum for the offices of U.S. Senator and U.S. Representative 1st District for the state of Iowa. The forum is scheduled to take place Sunday, April 6 at the YMCA in Postville from 1-4 p.m. and will feature Republican candidates slated to square off for those U.S. Congressional seats in the June 3 primary election this year.

Cut fiber optic line disrupts phone, internet

A cut to a Centurytlink fiber optic line in the Independence area impacted telephone and internet services throughout most of northeast Iowa Monday afternoon and evening, March 31. The cut line impacted a good portion of northeast Iowa, but services had reportedly been restored as of Tuesday morning, April 1.
