Dispose of unused medications this Saturday in Waukon

Area residents are invited to safely dispose of unused or expired medications at a National Prescription Drug Drop-Off Day collection event scheduled for this Saturday, April 26 in Waukon. The event is being held at the Waukon Fire Station, located in the first block of First Avenue NE, and will take place from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. that Saturday.
For safety and privacy:
• Keep all substances in original containers
• All liquid containers must be sealed in leak-proof, clear plastic bags
• Mark over/cross out any identifying information on prescription bottles

Scam involving internet banking compromise emerging in local area

Waukon State Bank and Viking State Bank & Trust have been advised of a scam circulating in the local area involving internet banking. Area individuals have reported receiving phone calls from an automated caller from the phone number "00" or "unknown caller". The automated voice may say, “Your Internet Banking has been Compromised,” and further instructs the individual to select prompts on the phone or enter their Mastercard number into the phone.

Wednesday meetings in Harpers Ferry, Waukon will focus on CWD

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is hosting a pair of public meetings Wednesday, April 23 in Allamakee County to update the public on chronic wasting disease and seek public input on partnering with hunters, taxidermists and meat processing lockers to increase surveillance on the area’s deer herd. The meetings are being held in response to a deer harvested near Harpers Ferry during the first shotgun hunting season last December testing positive for chronic wasting disease, the first wild deer to do so in the state of Iowa.

Three-peat!!! Allamakee County wins Live Healthy Iowa Community Cup Challenge for third straight year

Live Healthy Iowa announced its 2014 Cup Challenge winners at a press conference held Wednesday, April 16 in the State Capitol Rotunda in Des Moines, and for the third consecutive year, Allamakee County was crowned the winner of the Community Cup Challenge and remained the only community entity to win the Cup Challenge since its inception three years ago. Dani Bucknell, co-leader of the Get Active Allamakee Wellness Coalition with Stefanie Perkins and Director of the Waukon Wellness Center, accepted the Community Cup Challenge trophy at Wednesday's presentation in Des Moines.
