Honored as "Everyday Heroes of the Tri-States"

The American Red Cross of the Tri-States held its 10th annual Everyday Heroes of the Tri-States breakfast Tuesday, March 19 at the Best Western Plus in Dubuque to honor residents from the tri-state area for acts of heroism or just for their everyday commitment to others as well as to their community. A group of five northeast Iowa individuals were among the 16 people who received honors at the event, including Darryl Brink, Keith and Janet Schroeder and Justin Hager, all of Waukon, and Walker Hovey of Decorah.

Postville apartment fire claims life of one victim

Wednesday, March 13 at 10:54 a.m. the Postville Fire Department was dispatched by the Allamakee County Sheriff’s Office to the 600 block of West Post Street for an apartment fire.
Upon arrival at the scene flames were observed inside one of the apartment windows and smoke was rolling from the roof. Postville Fire Chief Jeff Bohr requested mutual aid from the Castalia and Ossian Fire Departments. An attack line was set up and a team went in to begin suppressing the fire while another team performed a search of the other apartments.

Statewide Tornado Drill scheduled to take place March 27

The Statewide Tornado Drill this year is slated for Wednesday, March 27 between 10-11 a.m. The drill will be carried out according to the following schedule:
10 a.m. - Test Tornado Watch
10:20 a.m. - Test Tornado Warning issued from the National Weather Service, La Crosse, WI
10:30 a.m. - All clear/end of test.

If there is severe weather in the area Wednesday, March 27, the drill will be postponed until the following day.

Residents of Allamakee County are invited to a public meeting with U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley Monday, March 25. The meeting will be held from 1:15-2:15 p.m. that day in the Community Room of Farmers & Merchants Savings Bank in Waukon.

Three area young ladies vying for crown of 2013 Allamakee County Dairy Princess

Brittany Johnson is the 17-year-old daughter of Rob and Lynn Johnson of rural Waukon. She will graduate from Waukon High School in May of this year.
She is employed at Hanson Hilltop Farms LLC, where they milk 136 Holstein cows twice a day in a double-ten parabone parlor. She has been active in dairy farming since she was old enough to walk, from playing with the baby kittens and the baby calves, feeding the baby calves, and being a Junior Dairy Ambassador. She now milks cows and feeds calves.

Mike Verdon elected as new Mayor of Lansing

Mike Verdon will be Lansing’s new Mayor following the special election held Tuesday, March 5. Lansing voters chose Verdon over current Lansing City Councilwoman Deb Volker by a 196 to 25 vote margin, with five other write-in votes being cast in the election.
The special election was held following the resignation of Joe Strobel earlier this year. Verdon was sworn in as Lansing's new mayor Thursday, March 7.
