Leo Brandt

Leo E. Brandt, of Paradise, Texas, and formerly of Waukon, died Monday, January 24, 2005, at the North Dallas VA Hospital in Lancaster, Texas, after a long battle with cancer. Funeral services were held Thursday, January 27, at the Hawkins Funeral Chapel, Bridgeport, Texas, with Rev. Craig Erb officiating. Interment was at DFW National Cemetery.
Leo was born January 19, 1947, in Waukon, Iowa, the son of Ralph and Mary Urell Brandt. He graduated from Waukon Senior High in 1965. In 1966, he joined the US Army and served in Vietnam.

The following cases were heard in the Iowa District Court of Allamakee County:

Moose-
Charlotte E. Moose, 53, Waukon was placed on probation after she forged a neighbor's check in May of 2004.
According to the report, on May 14 Moose removed a payroll check from Danielle Yearous's mailbox. She forged Yearous's name and cashed the check. Moose was interviewed June 7 about the incident and admitted to the crime.
Moose received a deferred judgement and was placed on probation for three years.

Harry Sander

Harry Sander, 83, longtime rural Waukon resident, died in Houston, Texas, Wednesday, February 2, 2005. Services were held in Houston Saturday, February 5 at Brookside Funeral Home-Cypress Creek. Local services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, February 9 at Zion United Church of Christ, Waukon. Friends may greet the family following the services. Martin Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Accidents reported in January

Troendle-
Ryan D. Troendle, 20, Lansing, lost control of his vehicle on Jan. 8, resulting in a one-car accident at approximately 8:30 p.m.
According to the report, Troendle was traveling east on Spring Valley Road, about one mile west of Highway 26, when he drove off the left side of the roadway and entered the ditch. Upon entering the ditch, Troendle's 1997 Chrysler Cirrus LX struck a rock and a tree, causing extensive damage to the vehicle.
The damages were estimated at $3,400. There were no injuries reported.

Joe Phillips

Joe J. Phillips, age 63, of Prairie du Chien, Wis., and formerly of Milwaukee, Wis., passed away Friday, February 4, 2005, at the Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital following a courageous battle with cancer. Funeral services were held Monday, February 7 at Garrity Funeral Home in Prairie du Chien.

Brooke M. Barr, 28, of Cave Springs, Ark., formerly of Postville, Monona, and Waukon, died Saturday, February 5, 2005, at Northwest Medical Center in Bentonville, Ark., of injuries received in an auto accident. Graveside services will be held Wednesday, February 9 at 2 p.m. at Oakland Cemetery in Waukon with Rev. Danny Volbrecht officiating. Friends may call from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon.

Emergencies can happen anywhere at any time and it is better to be prepared. The American Red Cross has various opportunities to help people of all ages become prepared to deal with emergency situations.
The programs offered by the American Red Cross include various Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), first aid, bloodborne pathogens, babysitters training, and Automated External Defibrillation (AED). Each of these classes can help prepare you for an emergency situation.

Grief Support Group

The local Grief Support Group will meet Tuesday, Feb. 22, at 3 p.m. in the Dining Room at Veterans Memorial Hospital.
This informal meeting is open to anyone suffering from any type of loss, whether it be death, divorce, illness, or some other grief.
Please feel free to attend and bring a friend. This grief support group meets the last Tuesday of every month at Veterans Memorial Hospital.
