Chamber seeking nominations for "Person of the Year"

The Waukon Chamber of Commerce is seeking nominations from community residents for Waukon's "Person of the Year" honor. This is the eighth year the Chamber will bestow the honor upon a Waukon resident fitting the award's criteria.

Benefit event Feb. 19 for victims of Jan. 21 house fire

A benefit event for Gerry and Janette Blong and Betty Ryder, who lost their home and belongings in a January 21 house fire, is being planned for Saturday, Feb. 19 at the Allamakee County Fairgrounds Pavilion in Waukon. Featuring a little something for everyone, the event offers the following schedule:
A meal will be served from 3 to 7 p.m., with a silent auction also getting its start at 3 p.m. and lasting until 9 p.m. A bake sale will also be held throughout the afternoon of the event. A dance DJ'd by Tom Frascht will take place from 7 to 11 p.m. to complete the event.

Bob Hager, Denise Hager to lead off annual Lenten breakfast events at area churches this next week

The tradition of weekly ecumenical Lenten Breakfasts is set to get underway once again this year, with the inaugural events taking place next week at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Waukon. The breakfasts begin at 6:45 a.m., serving coffee, juice and rolls, with the program starting at 7 a.m. Everyone is welcome to attend each week. The men gather each Monday during the Lenten season and start their breakfasts February 14. The women meet each Thursday and will begin their series of breakfasts February 17.

"Rivers and Bluffs Classic Tractors" holds inaugural meeting; Vintage tractor enthusiasts welcome

Keeping pace with the recent growing interest in older tractors in this area is the development of a group of classic tractor enthusiasts who actually held their first organized meeting as an official club Monday, Jan. 31. Adopting the name "Rivers and Bluffs Classic Tractors", the group's first meeting included a whopping 64 individuals in attendance from northeast Iowa, southwest Minnesota and southeast Wisconsin.

The aisles of Quillin's Food Ranch in Waukon were a bit more lively than normal Friday afternoon, Feb. 4, as the Allamakee County Farm Bureau sponsored a rather unique and generous way to observe "Food Check-Out Day".

Postville man arrested on meth and other charges

Friday, Jan. 28 Allamakee County Sheriff's officials were attempting to execute a federal arrest warrant pertaining to Grant Mork, age 51, at 311 Pole Line Road, Postville. Mork was not at the residence but deputies observed material used in the manufacture of methamphetamine in plain view. Officers obtained a search warrant for the property and located precursors for making meth, a pipe bomb, bomb-making material and a loaded firearm.

Waukon City Council, regular session, Monday, Feb. 7

The Waukon City Council met in regular session Monday, Feb. 7 in the Council Chambers at City Hall.
The first item on the agenda was discussion concerning the assistant police chief's wage. Officer Phil Young was appointed Assistant Chief January 9. It has been past policy to increase the wage of this position by one dollar per hour. This position is responsible for increased duties, including more administrative functions. The council approved the wage increase for Officer Young retroactive to January 9.

Gundersen Clinic, quality excellence in care are main topics of discussion at VMH Board of Trustees meeting

The Veterans Memorial Hospital (VMH) Board of Trustees met Tuesday, Jan. 25, discussing a number of items in addition to conducting typical first meeting of the new year business, including election of officers. Dennis Lyons will serve as board chairperson; Dave Stangeland as vice-chairperson; and Patty Fosaaen will serve as board secretary. Dr. Larry Barthell was also appointed as VMH Chief of Staff.
