Registration for Kindergarten and Bright Beginnings classes to take place Feb. 15, 16

Kindergarten registration for the 2005-2006 school year in the Allamakee Community School District's West and Waterville Elementary centers will be held as follows:
Tuesday, Feb. 15 - West Elementary, Waukon
Wednesday, Feb. 16 - Waterville Elementary.
As part of the registration procedure, the pre-school children and their parents will receive a letter inviting them to visit and participate in activities in the kindergarten classrooms. Vision screenings and parental information sessions are also scheduled.

Writers Retreat to be held in McGregor Feb. 19

Retreat activities will feature northeast Iowa writers Don Harstad, Jacquie McTaggart, and Denny Eilers, and will allow for writing time.

Horticulture Chautauqua planned for February 19

As gardeners wait for spring, they wish there was something to do. Fortunately, Iowa State University Extension will have its Second Annual Horticulture Chautauqua Saturday, Feb. 19 at the Roseville School gymnasium (about 10 miles SW of Charles City on Highway 14) from 9 am until 3 pm to get everyone started.
The morning session will feature three speakers who will talk about Landscape Design, Buck Roses, and New & Unusual Plants for Northeast Iowa.

The Board of Directors of PSB Bancshares, Ltd. (PSB), the bank holding company of Postville State Bank (Bank), and LeRoy C. Darby, Inc., have announced their agreement for the acquisition of PSB and the Bank by LeRoy C. Darby, Inc.

Annual Nightcrawlers Forever Benefit being planned for Feb. 27

The Nightcrawlers Forever committee is planning for the annual potluck benefit to be held Sunday, Feb. 27 at 11 a.m., with an auction to be held at 2:30 p.m.. This year's event will be held at a new location, Milty's on Main St. in Lansing.
The committee is once again seeking contributions from area businesses and individuals in an attempt to make the annual event another success this year. Those contributions may be in the form of a cash donation or merchandise donation, as raffle prizes are also needed for this event.

Question & answer session on methamphetamine set for February 22 in Waukon

The session will be held Tuesday, Feb. 22 at 12 Noon at the Main Feature Theater and Pizza Pub in Waukon.
The Waukon Police Department, the Allamakee County Sheriff Department, and Allamakee Substance Abuse Prevention (ASAP) will be available to answer questions those in attendance may have in regard to methamphetamine. The general public is invited to attend this session.
No reservations are necessary and there is no admission fee. Lunch will be available for purchase during the presentation.

Effigy Mounds to host "Owl Prowl" Saturday

Explore the life of one of nature's most fascinating creatures by joining Effigy Mounds National Monument staff for an "Owl Prowl" this Saturday, Feb. 12 at 5:30 p.m.
Along the way, participants will discover the many intriguing and unique adaptations owls use to survive. Visitors will have the opportunity to try to call great-horned, barred and screech owls during the evening.

Waukon Fire Department responds to lone call; blaze claims machine shed

The Waukon Fire Department was called out on just one occasion this past week, but to a very significant blaze that destroyed some farm property in rural Waukon. The summons was received at 11:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 31 at 1530 Trout Road east of Waukon, where a machine shed had caught fire.
By the time the department arrived, the building was completely engulfed and burned to a total loss, along with its contents. A motorhome parked alongside the shed was also badly damaged in the blaze. Department volunteers were on the scene for approximately three hours.

Allamakee County Board of Supervisors meeting, Feb. 7

The Allamakee County Board of Supervisors discussed and took action on several agenda items at its regular Monday meeting, Feb. 7. The board began by making one amendment to the agenda, which was to change the item listed as "Compensation for Data Processing/HIPAA Security Officer" to "Appoint/Compensation for Data Processing/HIPAA Security Officer".
There was no public comment, but during that time, Allamakee County Auditor Mary O'Neill announced that she would be attending a demonstration of the new voter equipment February 16 in Winneshiek County.
