College Recap

Seth Tweedy (Jr.) finished 3rd in the 200 free relay (1:26.10) and 400 medley relay (3:33.97) and scored a 4th place finish in the 100 free (48.62) Feb. 4 as the Iowa Hawkeyes swam at Northwestern. The Hawks lost the 2-day meet, 171-131. (Day 2 results were unavailable.)
Christa Hammel (Fr., F) registered 11 points, 7 rebounds, and 1 block Feb. 1 as Upper Iowa fell to Concordia-St. Paul, 85-51. The Peacocks fell to Bemidji State Feb. 6, 69-67, and Hammel had 18 points, 12 boards, and 2 blocks.

JV grapplers close out year at Riceville, New Hampton tourneys

Waukon's junior varsity wrestlers completed the 2004-05 season this past week with a pair of tournaments.

Riceville Tourney...
Tuesday, Feb. 1, the Indians headed to Riceville for tournament action. Waukon ended the day with a trio of championship finishes and four runners-up.
Format for the event varied slightly from most tournaments. Wrestlers were divided into four-man brackets and didn't compete in the typical weight classes.

Indians suffer road losses to Crestwood, North Fayette, fall at home to Prairie

After piecing together a four game win streak, the Waukon boys basketball team hit a skid this past week, suffering a trio of losses. Tuesday, Feb. 1, the Indians fell in Northeast Iowa Conference competition to second-rated Crestwood by a 66-55 tally. Friday, Feb. 4, Waukon took a 76-71 loss at North Fayette despite having a fine shooting night. Prairie du Chien handed the Tribe its third straight loss Monday, Feb. 7 by a 55-39 count.
Overall, the Indians are 9-7, including an even 4-4 mark in the NEIC.

JV girls march past Kee, 57-40

Friday, Feb. 4, the junior varsity girls basketball squad traveled to Lansing to take on Kee High. The Indians handed the host Hawks a 57-40 nonconference loss.
Waukon jumped to a 35-13 lead by halftime, but the Hawks surged back, outscoring the Tribe 17-9 in the third. That, however, was as close as Kee could get as they suffered a 57-40 loss.

Freshman girls fall to Lansing

Tuesday, Jan. 18 the freshman girls basketball squad suffered a 43-35 loss to Kee.
Peyton Wacker scored ten points to lead the Tribe and Rachel Berns added eight. Kati Nolting and Brianne Sivesind each finished with four points and Kayla Schellhammer chipped in three.
Brianne Bjerke, Allison Eickelberg, and Lindsay Drips each added a pair of points in the loss.
Nolting assisted on a pair of scores and added three rebounds. Five other Indians dished out one assist each.
Berns reeled in seven rebounds and Bjerke grabbed four.

Mosaic gets set to host annual bowling tournament

Bowlers of all ages and abilities are invited to River Lanes in Lansing for the annual bowling tournament for Mosaic, to be held Saturday, Feb. 19. This 9-pin, non-sanctioned tournament is open to any five-person team. Everyone will bowl three games. Cost is $15 per person. Door prizes will be awarded to bowlers throughout the tournament. Call River Lanes at 538-3998 to reserve a timeslot (11:30 a.m., 3 p.m. or 6:30 p.m.).
Mosaic provides services in northeast Iowa to persons with disabilities.

LaVonne "Vonnie" Meyer

LaVonne "Vonnie" Meyer, 83, of Lansing, Iowa, died Wednesday, February 2, 2005, at Thornton Manor in Lansing. Funeral services were held Saturday, February 5 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Lansing with Pastor Laura Gentry officiating. Graveside services were in the Guttenberg City Cemetery, Guttenberg, Iowa. Thornburg-Hanson Funeral Home of Lansing was in charge of arrangements.

Marvin "Dick" Hansmeier

Marvin "Dick" Hansmeier, 80, of Waukon, died Thursday, February 3, 2005, at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon, following a lengthy illness. Funeral services were held Monday, February 7 at Zion United Church of Christ in Waukon, with Rev. Richard N. Eick officiating. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery, Waukon. Martin Funeral Home in Waukon was in charge of arrangements.
