Deadline for accepting nominations for "Cloy Kuhse Positive Impact Award" is this Friday, August 31

At the Allamakee County Economic Development (ACED) Annual Meeting in 2011, the ACED Board of Directors announced a Business Recognition award. The “Cloy Kuhse Positive Impact Award” was created to honor the late Cloy Kuhse, who was a member of the ACED Board of Directors.

Dale and Karen Green inducted into Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame at State Fair

Dale and Karen Green of Castalia were inducted into the 2012 Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame during a ceremony at the 4-H Exhibits Building at the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines Sunday, August 19.
Ninety Iowa counties participated in the Hall of Fame selection process this year, selecting inductees for their outstanding service and dedication to 4-H. Inductees or their surviving family members were presented a plaque by the Iowa 4-H Foundation as they were introduced on stage.

The R.J. McElroy Trust of Waterloo has granted $15,000 to the Robey Memorial Library Expansion Project Capital Campaign, according to Capital Campaign Co-Chairs Ken Olson, MD and Will Ament.

Benefit event for Kaitlyn Quandahl

Four-year-old Kaitlyn Quandahl, daughter of Cory and Selina Quandahl of Decorah, was diagnosed with pontine glioma, cancer of the brain steam, July 29. Unfortunately, the tumor has been reported by medical professionals as being inoperable and incurable.
After recent treatment at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, MN, Kaitlyn has received her greatest wish: She is now home with her family, being cared for by her loving parents and many caring family members, neighbors and friends.

Living Stone hosts second "Girls 2 B Girls Adventure Camp"

The Living Stone held its second "Girls 2 B Girls Adventure Camp" August 5 and 6 at Upper Iowa Resort and Rental near Dorchester. 31 girls were in attendance for this overnight camp, coming from Waukon, Lansing, New Albin, Postville, Decorah, Castalia, and two from Texas. They enjoyed swimming, tubing, s'mores around a bonfire, stories, movies under the ‘big tent,' crafts and fun.

Quillin's Food Ranch makes donation to Athletic Boosters

Quillin's Food Ranch in Waukon recently donated $3,051.38 to the Allamakee Athletic Boosters, the proceeds from a fundraising event held at the store Friday, July 27. Pictured  with Quillin's General Manager Don Nagel (center) are Allamakee Athletic Booster members (left to right) Mary Meyer, Jennifer Garin, Kris Ward and Jeremy Kolsrud. Robey Memorial Library Expansion Project receives $60,000 Roy J. Carver grant

The Robey Memorial Library Expansion Project Capital Campaign has received a Roy J. Carver Charitable Trust Grant of $60,000. Capital Campaign Co-Chairs Ken Olson, MD and Will Ament announced this grant recently.
"This is a major grant toward our library expansion project and campaign,” said Campaign Co-Chair Ken Olson, MD. “We applied to the Roy J. Carver Charitable Trust a few months ago and their board decided on this major support. This brings our campaign fundraising total to about $1.3 million toward our ultimate goal of about $1.56 million,” Olson said.

Waukon library's Summer Reading Program highlights

The “Dream Big… Read!” Summer Reading Program (SRP) at Waukon's Robey Memorial Library has come to an end. Family Night, held Monday, July 9, was the kick-off of the SRP. The opening program was "Snakes Alive," featuring Tom Kessenich, Herpetologist of Blanchardville, WI. He shared with the 89 in attendance (59 kids, 30 adults) his love of snakes and reptiles bringing along a Western Fox Snake, Albino Burmese Python, Black and White Tegu (lizard), Bearded Dragon (lizard) and an alligator named Itty Bitty Gator. A special highlight for the kids was a chance to pet and hold him.

Allamakee Community Players announce auditions for fall comedy "Archie and the Wallflower" August 23

Auditions will be held  Thursday, August 23 at 7 p.m. in the fellowship hall at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Waukon for the Allamakee Community Players' fall comedy "Archie and the Wallflower."
Interested adult actors should come prepared to show off their most interesting characters. This is a group audition and participants will be asked to read a variety of roles. Those who are unable to attend the auditions but are interested in participating, or for more information, call the director, Kris Larson at 563-864-7766 or 563-380-4531.
