Local parents discuss school meals and school wellness at Postville meeting

Registered Dietitian Nutritionist Anne Blocker of Waukon and Postville Community School District Food Service Director Laurie Smith presented information on school wellness and school meals to a group of interested parents Monday evening, March 3 at the Postville YMCA. The program was sponsored by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Foundation and the Iowa Department of Education through a Team Nutrition educational grant.

Waterville Elementary sixth graders present Wax Museum project

Sixth grade students at Waterville Elementary School recently completed their annual Wax Museum project. The students each choose an historical individual and research their life. They create a Power Point presentation and write a short speech describing what made their character's life noteworthy, and then they memorize their speech and present it to small groups of younger students while wearing full costumes, as pictured at right. The event is also attended by parents and grandparents. The students greatly appreciate all those who helped with costumes, including St.

Participate, communicate, evaluate at Kee Cultural Fair set for March 17

Monday, March 17, The Kee High School Music, Spanish and Art departments will present their first annual Cultural Fair for the general public to take part in. The free Open House will be held from 5:30-6:45 p.m. in the Kee High School cafeteria, halls and gymnasium.

Kee High School Speech students advance 15 entries to State

All nine individual members of the Kee High School speech team will advance to the State Speech competition this Saturday, March 15 at Starmont High School after placing well at the District contest held March 1 at MFL/MarMac High School in Monona. The Kee students will advance a total of 15 entries, as some members competed in two events. Walking School Bus taking place in both Waterville, Waukon this spring

The Walking School Bus provides a safe, fun and active way for students to get to school. Both in-town and out-of-town students are encouraged to participate in the Walking School Buses, which will make a return appearance in Waukon this spring and will also be starting in Waterville later this month.

Des Moines Metro Opera's OPERA Iowa Educational Touring Troupe to perform at Waukon Jr. High March 12

OPERA Iowa Educational Touring Troupe, a program of Des Moines Metro Opera, Inc., has taken to the road for its 2014 tour and will be performing at the Waukon Junior High School next week for Kindergarten through fourth grade students. The group will perform John Davies’ "The Three Little Pigs," a telling of the classic fairy tale through the music of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and a reduced version of Gaetano Donizetti’s romantic comedy "The Elixir of Love".

Kee High School to host Cultural Fair March 17

Walk through a cave of art from ancient times. Listen to the band and choir perform music from Ireland and Spain. Be surrounded by Hispanic cultures and special celebrations created by students. All of this and more can be done Monday, March 17 at Kee High School in Lansing.

ACSD Board of Directors approves school calendar change from days to hours during weather-delayed session

The Allamakee Community School District (ACSD) Board of Directors met Tuesday, February 18 for its monthly meeting, that meeting being delayed a day from its originally scheduled Monday date due to winter weather. The meeting opened with a public hearing in regard to the district's proposed early start date of August 18 to the 2014-2015 school year, with the hearing being opened and closed with no oral or written comments being submitted.

RESCHEDULED: February 20 performance at WHS by "The Cat's Pajamas" postponed to March 3

The Thursday, February 20 performance of the a cappella vocal group "The Cat’s Pajamas" at Waukon High School, sponsored by the Allamakee Music Boosters, was postponed by the threat of winter weather to this Monday, March 3. This all-male a cappella group based out of Branson, MO will now be performing at the Waukon High School Auditorium at 7 p.m. Monday, March 3 as part of its seventh annual Music in Schools Tour.

Waukon High School Large Group Speech advances to All-State

February 8, Waukon High School’s Large Group Speech team headed to Waterloo to perform at the State competition. At the District competition two weeks earlier, 11 groups competed and nine of those were advanced to the State contest. The large groups that competed at State included two improvisational groups, a reader’s theatre group, a one-act play, musical theater, group mime, radio news, and two short films. Of the nine groups that performed at Waterloo, one has been selected to advance to All-State in Ames this Saturday, February 22.
